Whether you cut cords of firewood every week or only pull out your chainsaw a few times a year, it’s important to consistently perform basic chainsaw maintenance.

As a professional woodsman, I use my chainsaw several times every week. I’ve learned the hard way that the better you take care of your chainsaw, the better it will perform. So even though maintenance may not be the most exciting thing, it’s a critical part of having a chainsaw. I’ve broken the article into bite size sections covering chainsaw chain maintenance, fuel and oil maintenance, storage, and troubleshooting tips.

Basic Chainsaw Maintenance

  • Check the chain tension. You can do this by placing your thumb and forefinger on each side of the chain where it meets the bar, then pulling back gently until there’s about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) of slack. If there’s more than that, tighten it with an adjustment tool or screwdriver until you have just enough room for your fingers to fit between them comfortably. If there’s less than 1/4 inch (0.6 cm), loosen it slightly until you get that measurement before tightening again.
  • Sharpen or replace as necessary. Sharpening your chain will prolong its life and make it safer to use–but if you don’t have access to a sharpener or don’t feel comfortable doing so yourself (or if it’s just too expensive), then consider replacing it with a new one instead!

Fuel and Oil Maintenance

  • Use the correct fuel and oil mix.
  • Check the oil level.
  • Replace fuel and oil regularly.

Cleaning and Storage

Taking proper care of your chainsaw will drastically improve performance and increase the life of your chainsaw. When storing your chainsaw, follow these simple tips:

  • Clean the chainsaw after each use.
  • Store the chainsaw in a dry location.
  • Lubricate the chainsaw before storage.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you’re having trouble getting your chainsaw started or find it’s not performing properly, start with these three troubleshooting tips:

  • Check the fuel and oil mix. A slightly rich mixture will help prevent carbon buildup, but too much oil can cause problems with the carburetor and other parts of your saw.
  • Inspect the chain. Look for nicks or burrs on it, which may be causing excessive vibration as they rub against other parts of the saw’s body. If you find any damage to this kind, replace it immediately!
  • Check your spark plug for signs of wear or damage (such as cracks). It should also be free from dirt and debris that could interfere with its operation. Replace it if necessary; if you’re unsure how to do so yourself, consult an expert before attempting any repairs yourself.

Basic Chainsaw Maintenance Review

To wrap it over, let’s review the key points. First, chainsaw maintenance is very important and should not be overlooked. A well-maintained chainsaw is important for basic chainsaw safety and peak performance.

When performing maintenance make sure you’re considering these key areas:

  • The Chainsaw Chain
  • Fuel & Oil
  • Proper Storage

A well maintained chainsaw lasts longer and performs better. Save yourself issues down the road and be sure to regularly schedule time to perform basic chainsaw maintenance.

About the author

Upon moving to an off-grid homestead in the mountains of Colorado, I suddenly needed to saw, chop, and split a whole lotta firewood.

I wasn’t very impressed with the information I could find online. After three years using a chainsaw and cutting cord after cord of wood, I decided to create the website about chainsaws that I wished existed.
